The New Year is upon us, which means it’s a great time to reevaluate your goals for 2017! Though we all set different types of goals for ourselves, one resolution seems to always be at the top of the charts—to get healthy! The start of the New Year motivates us to pave our path toward a healthier lifestyle, but unfortunately, only around 8-10% of people actually meet their health goals at the end of the year. Maybe it’s all of the delicious temptations around us (hello double chocolate ice cream cake!), or maybe we get discouraged when we hit a plateau during busy season. Regardless of the distractions, 2017 doesn’t have to be that way. By making these tiny adjustments in your daily routine, you’ll be on your way to a healthier, happier you in no time.

Practice mindful eating

We hear it all the time, but what exactly does it mean? When you eat mindfully, you only eat when you are hungry. Too many of us snack based on emotion or out of boredom, racking up empty calories without even knowing it. Next time you reach for a snack, stop and ask yourself if you’re really hungry, or if you’re eating for another reason.

Make small swaps

Getting healthy doesn’t necessarily have to be a huge shift in your lifestyle—you can start with something small, like swapping your milk chocolate out for dark, or white carbs for complex ones (look for whole grains). One great way to boost your metabolism is to swap out refined/sugary drinks like juices and sodas for green tea (extra points for swapping for Matcha!—read about Matcha's health benefits). Not only will you be saving calories, but you will also be loading up on cancer fighting, immune boosting antioxidants with every cup.

Start out small

Whether you want to get fit or eat healthy, the most important thing to remember is to start out small. You don’t have to run 3 miles every day or cut sugar cold turkey—doing this will only increase your chances of giving up and reverting back to your old habits. Instead, start by setting small goals each month, like “I will try to exercise 2-3x a week this month.” Then, gradually raise the bar as each month passes. Let your body get used to the changes before adding another one.

Yes, you read that right! Life is all about balance, and it’s impossible to be healthy 100% of the time. So treat yourself to that slice of double chocolate cake once in a while—the important thing here is that you’re not indulging all the time. In short, as long as you maintain a well-balanced routine, you can have your (slice of) cake and eat it too.

Practice self-care

In a world that is constantly on-the-go, relaxing at the end of the day may be the last thing on your mind. With technology at the tip of our fingertips, enjoying peaceful and quiet moments are rare. In the process of the hustle, our mental well-being tends to get overlooked. So this year, make self-care a priority. Remember to breathe, unwind, and make some time for yourself every day. Whether it’s drinking a cup of your favorite tea or curling up with a good book, remember that self-care is just as important as the hustle.

Here’s to 2017!
